The role of news organizations in publishing excerpts from the Pentagon Papers, which documented the secret war and antidemocratic policies pursued in Indochina by five U.S. administrations, is well known.  Every bit as harrowing was the role of the Unitarian Universalist Association, which through Beacon Press published the Papers in their entirety.  The resulting prolonged FBI investigation of the UUA threatened the civil rights of every UU member.  Reflecting on the unity of our members, congregations, and association in that trying time helps us steel ourselves to stand firm for truth, democracy, and justice in the present day.
